Until 1977 there were relatively few consultancies in the UK specialising in commercial and contractual disputes and those companies worked almost exclusively in building and civil engineering. Many people within the construction industry, myself included, were unhappy with the limited service on offer. At that time, it appeared as if the main aim of a claims consultant was to actively encourage disputes and ensure their protracted resolution. Claims were unnecessarily complicated by constant references to the law and legal cases. Many perfectly valid claims put forward seemed to drown in a sea of unsupported narrative. The consultants were long on talk and short on facts.

I believed then, as I do now, that the industry did not need another traditional claims consultancy, but one that could forensically examine construction problems and analytically devise solutions. With the aim of speeding up dispute resolution by increasing understanding and providing detailed evidence, I established Trett Consulting Limited.

Now we are in the new millennium, I can look back at the formative years of our company and see that not only have we achieved our original goal, but we have grown too. Resolving disputes is only part of our purpose. We now offer services directly dedicated to the avoidance of contention as well as extending our range to include construction consultancy and specialist commercial services. Our presence today throughout the UK, mainland Europe, The Middle East and Asia confirms to me that I made the right decision in 1977.
